Lots of you know that my mum has dementia and lots

Lots of you know that my mum has dementia and lots of you have shared similar journeys. So, I thought it might be worth sharing a few lessons around pictures – some more obvious than others!

1. We can prevent the need of an ambulance!
We bought my mum a digital frame for Christmas that we can all send images to. She can’t work the frame herself, but it calms her down no end when watching it!
Older people with dementia are easily over stimulated, a bit like a toddler, and goes into similar meltdowns. For my mum that causes her heart to fall out of rhythm which sometimes means the ambulance is called out. All this is hugely overwhelming. We have found that simply putting her in front of the digital picture frame distracts her mind, calms her right down and we can save the ambulance coming out – that’s wild right? (I'm not suggesting anyone doesn't phone an ambulance when needed!)

2. She is AMAZED every time we show her a family film from a family gathering, a picture book or albums, even though she has of course seen them a million times before. She can’t remember and she has that initial surprise and delight all over again 😉

3. You can’t trigger memories if you don’t have the pictures to prompt with!
My mum has no memories AT ALL from when me and my sister where kids, and because she refused to be photographed there are no images to trigger any memories.

Does any of this resonate with anyone? The whole “I haven’t seen this film/album before” was one of the earlier signs that something wasn’t quite right….

PS: For the past few years I have been taking a selfie with my mum every time I visit, usually out on walks in the woods or by the lake as that is her calm place. I sometimes print them out and send to her in the post.
